World Age Group Duathlon Championships – Aviles Spain

Big congratulations to Wight Tri members, Sean Williams and Simon Jones who represented Team GB in the World AG Duathlon Chanpionships held at Aviles in France at the weekend.

Simon, in his third appearance in his GB kit, raced first in the World AG Sprint Duathlon event of 5km run/21km cycle and 2.5 km run. He started off with an impressive 19.58 to enter T1 in 7th place and although posting the 5th fastest bike split of 33.59, he was passed on the bike by the next fastest runner. He held this position until the end with his final run of 10.51 to finish in 1.08.54 and 8th in the 55-59 AG category out of 36 competitors. He was the 3rd GB athlete to finish which automatically qualifies him for the World AG Sprint Duathlon 2017..

Sean  Williams had a fantastic debut performance representing Team GB when he raced in the World AG Standard Distance Duathlon event (10km run/42km cycle and 5km run) and also finished 8th in the 45-49 AG category. A steady run of 39.00 saw him in 18th position out of 46 at the start of the cycle. However, his cycling prowess came to the fore when he passed several of his AG competitors and posting the 7th fastest bike split of 1.07.03 moved up to 8th place. Sean had a final run of 22.16 and although he was making inroads into the run of the competitor ahead, he ran out of time . Sean finished 8th in has age category in a final time of 2.12.33. Unfortunately Sean just missed out on automatic qualification for next year’s event finishing in 4th GB athlete spot.

Simon is part of the IOW Talented athlete scheme and wishes to thank Wightlink and the IOW council for their support.
Very impressive performances by booth guys.
